In March 2012, the Ansar Al-Dine group led by Iyad Ag Ghali managed to establish control over several cities in northern Mali, opening the door to a drawn-out wave of terrorist activity that is on the verge of entering its second decade soon and is expanding to include the Sahel states and neighboring regions. Terrorism in the Sahel is not only
characterized by proliferation and longevity, but it has also taken roots in communities by weaving a tangled web of relations with different actors, including local communities, tribal and ethnic leaders, and organized crime groups, in addition to a few state entities where corruption had prepared the ground for entanglement with terrorist groups.
